A Selection of Animal Portraiture

Nature was created perfect the first time. Animals have specific characteristics that are unique to them, which help them survive, thrive, grow, and reproduce. For example, cats have magnificent vision. Imagine being able to see details with a wide peripheral view in low light!

Horses are strong, fast, reliable animals that were created to run, pull, and carry. We view eagles as a patriotic symbol of strength and unity, but have you ever thought about how they see? Imagine being able to see in ultraviolet light - purples, blues, and blacks. Eagles not only see in UV, but they have precise vision enabling them to spot prey from a distance. Humans put so much work into replicating and mimicking these tools, yet they are inherent to these creatures.In my art work I demonstrate some of this magnificence in nature in many ways and through a variety of media, including graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic pens. In The Shape Shifter, I began by creating a dark base of graphite and erasing to emphasize the highlights, mimicking the octopus’s defense mechanism of emitting ink which allows them to evade predators. I used acrylic pens to achieve vibrant color and pattern in An Attractive Assassin, stressing the wide color spectrum of their vision as well as enhancing the colors of both the shrimp and their habitat, the coral reefs. By using colored pencils, I was able to replicate the intricate details and hues in both Atlas Moth and Luna Moth. These insects use their size and patterns to avoid becoming prey by replicating predator features. The Atlas moth uses a snake-like “head” on the tips of their wings, while Luna moths flutter their tails, disrupting a bat’s echolocation. Ultimately, my work seeks to expose viewers to the extraordinary existence of these creatures, some that are unimaginable to humans yet hiding among us in our everyday lives.

About the artist: 

Ava Castleman is a sophomore at Scott County High School. Her main academic focuses are art and agriculture. She lives on a farm in Sadieville, Kentucky and has been fascinated by all sorts of creatures since she was a young girl. She hopes to study art in college and is interested in graphic design and floral design.

The Mingled Oaks are an acoustic folk rock jam band out of Georgetown, KY that plays original, traditional, and cover songs with instrumentation such as guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and cajon. Their sound infuses folk, classic rock, and soul to create a unique and raw musical experience for listeners. Playing the local music scene for almost 10 years, you can find them at pubs, breweries, and festivals all over the Central KY area.

Alicia New a singer/songwriter from Frankfort, Kentucky writes songs ranging from the soulful strains of sad love songs to light hearted playful tunes and lots of colorful tales evoking visions of magical places. An avid music lover who plays multiple instruments and percussion she loves traveling and playing music festivals such as The Festival of The Horse Best of The Bluegrass in Georgetown last year.

Johnny Columbus is a singer, guitarist, and songwriter rooted in Appalachian soul, blues rock, and road-worn American music. With a Les Paul in hand and stories shaped by small towns, back roads, and late nights, his sound blends gritty blues phrasing, classic rock fire, and country-leaning storytelling into something raw and honest. A seasoned live performer, Johnny has spent years playing clubs, festivals, and listening rooms, both as a solo artist and alongside other musicians. He’s shared stages with Huck Song-Smith and previously fronted the band Shoot the Moon, earning a reputation for emotionally charged performances and no-frills musicianship that puts the song first. Whether stripped down and intimate or turned up and electric, Johnny Columbus delivers music that feels familiar but never tired, music made for jukeboxes, dance floors, and long drives with the windows down

The Last Rodeo Music Show Mike on guitar/vocals Debbie on bass/vocals Leigh Ann Tucker on violin.

 3 Cent Nickel; Buck Cooper and Troy Estes are 3 Cent Nickel. They are an acoustic duo that plays classic country and rock, from Hank to Seger, along with tunes from Willie, Waylon, and Wells to other favorites like Johnson, Stapleton, Prine, and on and on. Buck was born in Texas and was raised in Ky. and is steeped in Lexington’s musical history. His voice is a presence to be reckoned with. Troy, now in Stamping Ground, is from the Appalachian foot hills of Estill County where old time country, storied songs and bluegrass still reigns. His bluegrass harmonies and voice range seem endless. Together they bring the audience into the evening with great harmonies, some pretty fair pickin, and their way of doing songs that is unique, if not at times, off the wall.

Jeff is a Georgetown based songwriter and acoustic performer. Raised in the hills of Pike County, Ky his roots are based in Americana/Appalachian /Bluegrass. His songs tell stories about coal mines, hard times, and things that catch your heart. He performs solo shows up to full Jeff Blackburn Band. Kyle  Biggs was born and raised in Upstate NY and made his way to Georgetown,  Kentucky in 2015. A long time campfire picker, he recently caught the bug of performing live all over Georgetown and the surrounding areas. He  gives his thanks to all the local musicians who have pulled him in and helped along the way. If you’re looking for a Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan influenced playlist, this is the night for you!

Wyatt  Newman is a singer-songwriter who’s been making music since the age of nine. Now 26, his sound draws from a wide range of influences—spanning classically trained academia, raw garage punk, and everything in between. His latest release, “Where and When,” marks a new chapter in a career defined by emotional storytelling and genre-blurring experimentation.

James Beers and the Wandering Woodsmen Hailing from the cornfields of Indiana, James started late in his music endeavors- picking up the guitar as an adult. His love of music and song-writing continues to develop in his alt. country and blues storytelling style. In the past year, the addition of Allan Day (Mandolin) and Shane Martion (lead guitar) created the trio "James Beers and the Wandering Woodsmen"-a group that brings covers and original work to life in an engaging, heartfelt experience. Most weekends you will find them performing at local bars and coffee houses, sharing stories in song.

Kentucky  born and raised from a holler in Montgomery, Huck Song-Smith is a spunky and sassy singer-songwriter coming in hot to the music scene with  something to prove. She is a true vocal powerhouse of this generation, focused on spreading love to those she connects with.

Nate Jones is a seasoned musician with over 20 years of experience playing in and around central Kentucky. Known for his unique sound, Nate masterfully blends his Kentucky roots with a laid-back, almost island vibe, creating a musical style that is both refreshing and captivating. Throughout his extensive career, Nate has become a staple in the local music scene, performing at numerous venues and events that showcase his versatility and talent. His performances are marked by a genuine connection with his audience, delivering each song with heartfelt authenticity and a relaxed charm. Nate's EP, Modus Ponens, is a testament to his musical journey and can be found on all major streaming platforms. Bryce Ernest Taylor is a singer/songwriter, psychology professor, sound engineer, father, and lover of nature and creativity who currently resides in Versailles, KY. His latest album, "Man with the Muse" (2022) was listed in the top 20 albums in October 2022 on the FAI (Folk Alliance International) Folk Radio Chart. More recently this same album was listed in the top 15 of Roots Music Report’s “Alternative Folk Album” chart and the top 40 in the larger “Folk Album” category (8-12-2023).
